Catalina Island, Ca With My Mother?

I'd like to plan a surprise trip for my mother to catalina before I start school again. Monday-Wednesday trip taking the catalina express from dana point where is the closet place to stay from there or not to far place. I have never been to catalina so I dont know what the walking distance is like
