Backpacking in Bangkok?

The other day I read how Bangkok is the #2 tourist destination in the world. I've never had any interest in going there, but after reading a bunch of stuff about it it seems like a really interesting place. How much do you think would be a "decent" budget for a trip to Bangkok? Anyone here's been there before? Would $2500 suffice? (excluding airfare)
