A & D. Monitoring ocean temperatures is easily done via infrared detectors, and is currently done now. Detection of mineral deposits is also a valid answer, since minerals emit their own spectral signature. Satellites and fly-overs carry equipment that can detect and identify those spectral signatures and use them to locate specific minerals.
