Late ignment will it be accepted?

I recently handed in two essay a week late,I was under serious pressure training for my football team(we trained three nights a week and had matches on the weekend)so I found myself exhausted and to tired to read and type...I eventually got them done,but couldnt hand them in sooner as my grandmother fell ill and I had to spend time with her...the lecturer said to write him a letter explaining the late ignment and it should be ok,I also told him I lost the essay while attempting to save it...should the excuse be accepted?i know im at fault i jst burned out from training
